Nau mai haere mai. Here at HIBS the Māori culture has really started to grow and blossom, becoming a crucial part of our Special Character. With this development, HIBS has also seen the introduction of a Kapa Haka group that comes together on a weekly basis to celebrate Māori culture through song, haka and chant. From a school perspective, we see the Kapa Haka as a fantastic means of providing our students the opportunity to develop, nurture and enhance their learning about Māori language, culture and identity in a creative, dynamic and powerful manner.
We are fortunate that the Kapa Haka is led all year round by Whaitiri Poutawa, who is very knowledgeable and experienced in the art of Kapa Haka. Our group is open to students of all ages, cultures and competency levels, and we are always keen for new members to join throughout the year. Sessions run every week during a Thursday lunch time in P3 in the Performing Arts Block. So come along, give it a go and try something new. We look forward to seeing you all there.
