Our whāinga (purpose) is:
To tautoko HIBS in becoming a bi-cultural environment where our tamatāne and whānau thirve as Māori and as part of the school community.
Our kaiako and ākonga enjoying and achieving cultural and educational success as they develop the skills, tools and knowledge to confidently engage in te ao Māori, HIBS, Aotearoa and the wider world
To tautoko a combination of activities throughout the year that:
Provides our tamatāne and whānau opportunities to grown in their mātauranga and sense of identity
Supports and encourages the school to build their collective cultural capability and competence.
Below is our most recent wānanga.
Earlier this month our whānau rōpū came together to wānanga the development of te rautaki Māori (Māori strategy) for HIBS. Participants included kaiako (teachers), tamatāne (young men), and parents all contributing their whakaaro (thoughts) and perspectives.
The wānanga was not only an opportunity to provide a platform for kōrero to be heard, it was also a great space to whakawhānaungatanga. Our tamatāne shared their aspirations for the kura, parents discussed how our young men can thrive, and staff highlighted the challenges and opportunities within the school.
The main outcomes was the development of our three year, HIBS rautaki Māori (HIBS Māori strategic plan). This strategy support HIBS in becoming a bi-cultural environment where our tamatāne and whānau thrive as Māori and as part of the school community. It focuses on enhancing student engagement, promoting inclusive practices, and supporting the school to build their cultural capability.
This wānanga was a great reminder of the value of collective kōrero. As we move forward, we look forward to turning these insights into actions, to shape the future of our ākonga (students) and HIBS.
